5 President's Day Books For Children

Did you know that President's Day is referred to by fourteen different official names? It is also called Washington's Birthday, Washington's and Lincoln's Birthday, to name a few. Either way, it is meant to celebrate the office of the presidency more than a particular president. The following books celebrate a variety of levels of government.

1. Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio, illustrated by LeUyen Pham

Grace is shocked to learn that no woman has ever been the President of the United States and is inspired to run for class President. This book does a fantastic job explaining the electoral process while still being entertaining for kids.

2. Arthur Meets the President, written & illustrated by Marc Brown

In this book, Arthur wins an essay contest to meet the President in Washington, D.C. He writes about making America great, but he is so nervous about delivering his speech that he doesn't know what will happen.

3. President Taft is Stuck in the Bath by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Chris Van Dusen

This book takes an anecdotal true story about the President of the United States getting stuck in his bathtub and turns it into a civics lesson about the cabinet structure in the early 1900s.

4. I am George Washington by Brad Meltzer, illustrated by Chris Eliopoulos

This comes from the 'Ordinary People Change the World' series. Chris Eliopoulos' illustrations place a child version of George Washington in the center of the book and tell the story of the first President's life.

5. Duck For President by Doreen Cronin, Illustrations by Betsy Lewin

Duck is tired of doing chores, so he decides to run for election to make some changes. But at soon as he wins, he sets his sights on bigger and better things. He does this repeatedly until he has his sights on being the President of the United States of America. This book does an excellent job introducing the various levels of government to kids.
